The first purpose of this qualification is to produce graduates with the necessary skills in the method of research, as part of a vocational training for professional scientists. Many employers in South Africa require an MSc as the minimum qualification for working in a particular field. This the programme will embody aspects of practical training essential for functioning as a senior scientist I a work environment. The purpose is also to equip graduates with the tools necessary for them to be professional academic practitioners in their particular disciplines, again, most south African universities insist on an MSc level. The second purpose of this qualification is to provide South Africa with significant numbers of graduates in the natural sciences in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and knowledge based economic and scholarly activity in these fields is widened.
