You pick the kind of model you want to employ to the study the class of systems you are interested in. Of course, there are going to be various approximations involved. You have to find the right balance between finding a model that is good enough to study the system but at the same time tractable through theory and computation. Then you do the actual math. In the case of electromagnetism, this would involve a lot of vector calculus. |
