Master Exchange in Dissecting roles of miRNAs in subcellular localization and translation of mRNAs
Language requirements
Participants should be fluent in both written and spoken English. Applicants from countries where English is not the language of instruction need to have obtained a score of at least 550 on the TOEFL test (or a score of at least 213 on a computer TOEFL test) or provide proof of an equivalent test or provide proof that part of their education was in English.

BA degree in Biological Sciences, average grade 2.4 or better (German grading system)

Up to 90% of human DNA is estimated to be transcribed into so called non-coding RNAs that are not translated into proteins. Many of them act as potent modifiers of gene expression. miRNAs are a class of such short non-coding RNAs, that regulate translation and stability of mRNAs. In highly polarized cells, many mRNAs have specific subcellular localization patterns and their translation is often regulated in a localization-dependent manner. Many human pathologies, including neurological disorders such as the Fragile X syndrome, are associated with a failure to localize and translate mRNAs at specific subcellular sites. The aim of the project will be to dissect the roles of miRNAs in these processes. The project will involve a combination of biochemical, computational and imaging approaches.
